It's a bad situation in trying to choose between leaving a deer that may still be good or risking food poisoning. I wished it was easier to tell.

Here is a pic of an estimated 400 pound black bear that Riverrat and me were after. Another friend shot him and the bear ran onto private property.

The rut will go in and out here until the end of the season. The buck/doe ratio is out of whack bad here. Riverrat's buck was chasing a doe when he shot it. We got another doe that evening in the pouring rain, but w/ no pic. I was mainly concerned of getting my deer out of the mountains and not drowning while in the process! LOL...

Good luck!!! I started getting into taxidermy work several years back and really enjoyed it. It is very time consuming, but still cool to do. My biggest reason for not continuing in it was the old family and friend factor. They were the ones who wanted the fastest, best and cheapest work!!! If you can do it as a business and require a 50% deposit up front than you can do good at it! Again, good luck and I hope it works out for ya!

Rules for this years contest are the same. We will take the top 10 entries from each team. Each member may upgrade his entry and/ or enter more than one deer. Rifle and muzzleloader kills will count as 5 points plus one point for each scorable tine. A scorable tine MUST be at least 1" in length. Archery entries will be scored as other entries except they will be multiplied by 1.5. Each entry must include photo with hunter, deer and weapon. If weapon is not in pic the deer will be scored as a rifle kill. We will add contest members as needed until October 1st. Good luck and good hunting!!!! Hope everyone has a great and safe season!!!

Oh yeah!!! Pre-Rut is the best time to use scents when the bucks are starting to cruise for doe's! The best attractant other than fresh doe urine that I get from recent kills has been "Still Steaming". If the bucks are actually in rut it is nearly impossible to pull them from a hot doe.

I have been seeing several good bucks lately on huntable land. It has been severely dry here and for some reason I have always had very good luck in the dry seasons??? Anyone else seeing good bucks?

Yep, it's been VERY slow. It will pick back up soon. I haven't been on much due to being worked to death. My work schedule just changed, so I will have plenty of time to delete the deer, bear, hog and fish populations! LOL....

You can get them year round on private land. I have to hunt public land, so I have to wait for an open season.
