I'm late to this discussion but would like to add my two cents.I have two deer rifles. One is a pre64 Winchester model 70 in .243. I took a 120 lb doe and a 145 lb 9pt buck with it this year. These are number 37 and 38 with this rifle.I bought a Ruger M77 in .243 for my grandson and had to try it out.So far I've taken 2 does with it.Shot placement is everything with any rifle.I can shoot the .243's all day at the range and have confidence in them when hunting.

Out of the three guns mentioned by JD, I think they are all good deer cal.'s. I have a 243 and it is a sweet shooter. I helped a friend find a load for his brother-in-laws 7mm-08 and that took us a lot of time finding a load that grouped well. I own a 25-06 and that is also a sweet shooter. What is nice about an 25-06, is as long as they keep making 30-06 ammo. I'm going to have brass for my 25-06 and I don't see anybody closing the lid on the coffin for the 30-06 for a long, long time.

No, the '06 won't be going anywhere in my lifetime. You can also make 25-06 brass from 270 Win, and it is a bit easier. Or so I have been told. 3212- Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. I am strongly leaning towards the 243, just because I could use it here for yotes as well. But, like I said in an earlier post, I go round and round. LOL
