hey guys. not sure how the stuff in your house seems to know when tax time is coming around, but it's about time to replace my washer and dryer. i used to work on these things for a living, but that's been a few years back. wanted to know what everybody's got and what they think of them. my wife wants a front load washer set, but they were less than reliable when i was working on them and cost a fortune to fix. have they gotten any better? my parents have a set and they're not too crazy about them. just trying to get a feel for what everybody has and your experience. thanks!

We have only had the top load kind, and they seem to do ok. My Mother-in-law has a whirlpool front load and she is happy with it.

A year and a half ago we replaced our frontload set. It was a Whirlpool Duet. We bought the set around 2003. The dryer had been having issues for almost a year, and then the door seal on the washer tore. Water everywhere. To repair it was going to cost ~$500 for parts and labor. We decided to just go back to a cheaper top load set. We ended up buying a basic GE set. Well, the washer made it a year and a half. A couple weeks ago my wife started a load of laundry. I went back into the laundry room 30-40 minutes later and it was still filling. Well, it was full of water, and so was the laundry room. The repair guy quoted us a price of $385 for parts and labor. On a unit we paid $400 new! We kept the GE dryer for now. It works fine and gives us no problem. We replaced the washer with a Whirlpool Cabrio top load. It is Model #: WTW5700XW. Lowes.com lists the price as $699.00, but we got it from Lowes for $589. www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-WTW5700XW-Top-Load-Capacity-Temperatue/dp/B003JN51PEThe overall review is much better than this one on Amazon. I just used this link as the link from Lowes will not work here for some reason. We have been very happy with it so far. We contemplated between this one and the 5.0 Cu. Ft Cabrio. Besides the size difference, the 5.0 was direct drive instead of belt. That results in a higher spin speed. My concern was, if a belt brakes I can replace it. If the direct drive brakes, it is time to call in the repairman. Also, without upgrading our dryer, we couldn't wash that many clothes anyways. It would take a very long time tog et them dry. Oh, and I did buy the extra warranty on this unit. I may be a slow learner, but I do learn eventually. LOL

thanks guys. i'm a big whirlpool man myself, and my wife is crazy about the duets so they may be in my laundry room before too long.

I'm sure you will be more than happy with the Duet. While we had problems with ours, it was a 1st generation Duet. They are up to 3rd or 4th gen now and have a ton of the issues worked out. At least that is what we heard.
