Last spring, my brother in law found a great deal on a little Fourtrax 70 4 wheeler for my kids. It only took a couple weeks till WVgirl and I figured out we needed another one for us. So I got a great deal on a Honda Recon 250 that needed a little work. It ran okay, but it was burning a lot of oil, and I decided to put a set of rings in it. I finally got around to it last weekend.
Here's what it looked like to start with. As you can see from the putty on the front it's kind of rough:
Pulled the plastic, seat, gas tank, and shields off:
Next took off the valve cover, pushrods and rocker arms, and we're down to the head:
Took off the cylinder:
This is what a surgeon feels like when he holds a beating human heart in his hand:
Honed the cylinder (and washed it in the kitchen sink when WV Girl wasn't home

Replaced the rings, put it back together (no extra parts!), and fired it up. It ran great. I had a bad moment when I noticed oil running down the the front of the valve cover.
Turns out I just forgot to torque down the valve adjustment access plug. Tightened it up and it's like new.
Total cost of repair: $48 for the rings and gasket kit.
