Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Spent a low key day with the kids, then had a softball game last night. Then today we spent the afternoon/evening with my parents. Had a great time, and it was a great way to celebrate.
Thanks again.

I went last Wednesday and had two epidural steroid injections. Wow, those are a lot of fun. Although the pain relief is certainly welcomed. I still have problems, and pain, but I seriously feel better than I have in years.
This was the last prerequisite for surgery. I meet with the neuro-cutter on Monday. I am so not looking forward to this. I want the pain gone, but I am not happy that I have to increase my pain level to do it. Last surgery was easy. I was in so much pain, the thought of surgery was nothing as I just wanted relief. Now, I have pain but nowhere near that level. I am still absolutely pissed that I have to have this done, when it is the surgery I should have ALREADY had.
Oh well, enough venting for now. Everyone take care, and again thanks for all the well wishes.

I know back pain, and know it very well.
First, and foremost, get to the Doctor ASAP. You need hi-res, detailed MRI images of your spine. Nerve damage is nothing to put off. If you have a herniated disk, and it is pinching a nerve, the longer you wait the less chance you have of a full recovery. Nerves can repair themselves, but only if the damage is not bad. I put off mine, and as a consequence, the nerve running down my right leg to my foot has died completely. The right side of my leg, and ankle as well as my toes are completely numb. When walking for more than 10 minutes, my whole right leg goes completely dead.
If you just have bulged disks, they can be treated effectively with physical therapy. There are exercises they will have you do that will actually draw the bulged disk back where it belongs.
But again, you need an MRI to identify your problems. Until you know WHAT is wrong, you cannot treat the problem only the symptoms. The problem with only treating the symptoms is you may increase the damage inadvertently.
Take it from a guy with 20/20 hindsight, and a guy who will live the rest of his life with nerve damage. It sucks, and sucks bad.
If you have any questions, or want to discuss this more just drop me a PM. Good luck, and take care,
JD

Unfortunately, this has gotten placed on the back burner. I have been busy with physical therapy in preparation for back surgery. As soon as I get back on the mend, I will tear into this with a vengeance! lol

I have a few announcements I would like to make. I am sorry I haven't been around much, but some things take precedence. As a lot of you know, I have back issues. Those issues have been getting worse. I had an MRI done, and I will be going in for another surgery. This time I will be getting the surgery I should have gotten four years ago. I will also be the new owner of four titanium pins and two titanium rods.
Between work, surgery, recovery, therapy, and family I will not be around much for a while. If anyone needs to contact me, just send me a PM here and I will get back to you within a day.
Also, Term will not be around a whole lot either as he has his own things going on. So, we have appointed a new mod to keep an eye out for spammers. On Point has graciously accepted our invitation to help. You all know how to play nice, so I have no worries about the day to day activity here. Spammers though, they just need to be shot on site.
On Point- You have some big shoes to fill. For one, I wear a size 15 Wide. For two, my record still stands. Spam post to deletion- 32 seconds! lol
I hope everyone is doing well, and is getting to enjoy some quality time in the outdoors. Take care, and see you in the near future.

MOA stands for minute of angle. One minute of angle is roughly 1" at 100 yards, 2" at 200 yards, etc.

This will be my Remington 597 Project thread.
I got this 597 10 years ago. At first it was giving me some problems, with regard to reliably feeding. After some research, I found that the magazines were the culprit. This particular rifle has the second generation magazine, and it still had issues. The fix is actually quite simple, and will not be included in this project. If you need to fix the magazine on your rifle, a quick web search will get you the info.
This project has three objectives. 1. Function 2. Accuracy 3. Appearance
Function- Right now this rifle runs great. However, I think it can run better, and more smoothly. I will be polishing the bolt, as well as the guide rods. Generally slicking up the action. This will help it run smooth when it is very dry/dusty as well as in sub-freezing temps.
Accuracy- These rifles actually have really good barrels with nice barrel crowns. They are capable of very good accuracy, with a little elbow grease. First, I am going to float the barrel. Secondly, I am going to polish the hammer to give a smoother/lighter trigger pull. I may, or may not, be replacing the extractor with an aftermarket one depending on how it goes.
Appearance- I am not 100% sure where I am going to go with this part yet. It came with a dark gray synthetic stock, and it definitely needs something else. Right now I am leaning towards painting the stock black. Depending on how that looks, I then might camo paint the whole rifle.
As it stands right now, that is the goals of this project. Things may get added as I go along and tear into it. I am going to document the whole process. I will take pictures of each step, and write up the details and how-to of what I did.
NOTICE
This is the details of how/what I am doing to MY rifle. I am not liable/responsible for what anyone else does with their firearms. If you don't really know what you are doing, then please do not attempt any modifications to your firearm.
I thought I better put that in there as this is on a board that the public can view. I'm sure everyone here is smart enough not to do something that could get fingers blown off, but lets face it there are plenty of those people in the world! lol
I will be starting this in the next week or so. Once I start I will add the steps as they are completed. Any questions are comments, feel free to chime in.

Got the itch, like I spent the weekend in Vegas! ROTFLMAO
Planning on doing more than last year, and that is saying something. We went out something like 32 times between June and July. Our daughter is quite "hooked", and she wants to catch a big catfish this year. Last year she finally managed to land a 1 1/2 pound Channel, and she was stoked!
This year her and I are going to go out just the two of us. I know a few places on the Rock River where she has a real good chance of hooking a 10-20 pound cat. I will probably limit her to 12 pound test though, as she also has a really good chance of hooking into a 30-40 pound Flathead, and that would be a lot of fish for her to try and handle in a boat. I have caught 4-5 in this section of the Rock that have went over 40 pounds, so I know they are in there.
She also is really excited about starting the Mepps Master Angler Program. You have to catch four qualifying fish to become a master angler, and I think we can get that done for her as well. We are going to try for Crappie (White and Black), Bluegil, Sunfish, and Largemouth Bass. The minimum weights are 1 pound for the first three fish, and the minimum on the Bass is 3 pounds. I have a new little honey hole that she can get 3/4. The Black Crappie is the only one that is not in that little private lake. Last year she caught each of the three species, over the minimum weight in that little lake. But she was using a different lure, she has to do it with a Mepps lure. But, we know they are there, and she had good success with Mepps lures the few times she used them last summer.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention it but I now have a fishing boat. My father bought it, and it needed some work. I did all the labor, and the deal is he will store it and use it once in a blue moon. Any time I want it, I just have to go get it. It is an older 14' extra wide jon, has three new swivel seats, new trolling motors, and is a great little boat. It doesn't turn heads, but it works for what we want.

Well, I'll go ahead and document the project. Their is no specific timeline, as this will be fit in around my three jobs, knife work, and family.
I'll probably start up the initial thread today. Work on the project will not actually begin for a week or two. I have several knives ordered that I have to get done ASAP. The knives got put on hold while I have been helping my parents out while my father has been down and out. His cast comes off this week, and I am DONE manning the grill! lol So as soon as I get caught up I will be starting this.
Thanks

I am also doing:
-replacing the extractor if needed -Free floating the barrel
I am looking to improve on three things. Function, accuracy, and looks. My goal is to get a rifle that runs smooth and flawlessly, and is plenty accurate for squirrels and rabbits.

The Supermag is a pretty good shotgun. I never had any issues with the one I shot. You just have to remove the barrel seal activator (metal ring behind the seal) when you are going to shoot 3" and 3 1/2" shells.
I think the Versa_max is a better shotgun, but mainly because you do nothing to shoot different shell lengths. For me the Versa-max also handled better. In my opinion it is also a much better shotgun overall than the Benelli's. But it does run $500 more than the Supermag.
If the fit for you is good, then you should be good to go with the SuperMag. As for jamming, like I said the one I shot ran fine (approx. 300 rounds). You can get lemons with any shotgun on the market. But my guess is, most complaints are either false, operator error (such as not using the barrel seal activator on 2 3/4" loads), not properly breaking it in, or having an o ring that does not seal properly.
Clean the gun properly, lube it up properly, and properly break it in with 1-200 rounds of heavy field loads. It will more than likely run just fine and never give you an ounce of problems if you do that. I do that with any semi-auto shotgun I get, regardless of operating system or maker.

Hey guys, I am going to start a Rem 597 Project. Is anyone interested in seeing an ongoing tutorial on it? A few of the things I believe I will be doing include; working over the trigger, possibly polishing up the action (bolt, guide rails, etc.), minor stock work, camo painting/finishing the rifle.
If anyone is interested I will post updates, basic instructions, and photos of the process. Some things will be specific to the 597, and some will be applicable to any rifle.
Just seeing if there is any interest, don't really want to do all the extra work if no one will benefit from it. lol
Thanks

Some deer seized by the CPO in Illinois this year. This one was seized after an 11 month investigation. This one was shot by two idiots in Kankakee county, with a rifle.
