Well Ive been putting off deer hunting to chase waterfowl for to long. Finally went out with my buddy for the weekend. After a rough first morning and finding out my scope was bumped the hard way by missing a buck, I went and bought new ammo and sited it in. After I was dead on at 100 I was ready to keep trying to fill my first ever North Dakota deer tag. This was the first ever time ive missed Wisconsin deer hunting in my life so I had high hopes to make sure Id still get my deer. We went on a deer drive and a bucked jumped up to the left of me but there was a guy there and he shot but did not prevail. Not 2 min later out ran a coyote and my Benelli R1 300 WSM barked and I gave him the ol texas heart shot and down he went. My first kill with the rifle and a confidence booster.
After that we began to drive around and I spotted 2 deer out in a field. After glassing them over I saw they where bucks. After closing a little distance and realizing they were getting a little spooky, I hunkered down and got comfortable. Made a nice steady rest for my self and got ready. I called to one of the guys I was with to give me a range. He said 430 yards....Although this would be my farthest shot to date I felt confident being sited in at 100 with the Nikon Monarch 16 power scope. I put my 400 BDC redictle right behind his shoulder took 2 deep breaths and squeezed the trigger. The buck, bucked up and ran off behind the other deer and into the shelter belt before I could get another shot off. I went up and couldnt find blood. After looking and looking I went to the other side of the shelter belt and found tracks and small specks of blood. We tracked the deer for about 100 yards until we hit cattails and backed off til the morning. We came back the next day and found him. A nice little 8 point, my first ND deer and my biggest buck to date. Needless to say Im a little excited and he sure will taste good. My 4 year bad luck deer streak has finally come to an end!
