me and one of my buddies was leaving the truck Saturday morning when we hear the unmistakable sound of tires on lock down followed by a thud.It was not far at all from us so we go and check on driver. We get there it is still dark(6:30 am) we see vehicle on edge of road , we walk up and see the deer in ditch struggling to to get up It was a beautiful 10 point my buddy dispatched him with his side arm just so happens the driver was headed to his club for opening morning of black powder season. We helped him load buck and he was on his way .Fortunately it did not ruin his ride. I took a few pics of the buck and will download soon. All i can say for now is he was a great buck........to be continued.......

Wow...ditto for me this morning. Im coming back from the nursery with a trailer full of plants for my job today and pass an awesome buck down on the side of the road....a dodge 2500 pulled over a couple hundred yards ahead with a police on scene. I turned around to go look at the deer not realizing that the truck had just hit the deer. I get out and examine the huge buck and was just about to harvest some antlers when another truck pulls up with lights flashing. A kid jumps out saying please don't do that my uncle just hit that deer and wants to keep it. I apologize and volunteer to help load it.
It was a really massive 10 pt that prolly weighed about 180 plus pounds. I was somewhat sick but also pumped about seeing a huge buck like that killed in broad daylight. Sad to say it was not me. Truck kill or not that was a wall hanger.

I tried to salvage a doe that had been hit beside the road last year. It was low teens that morning and probably 25 when I left the woods at midday. There was a road killed doe not far from where I was parked that I hadn't seen that morning. I think it got hit sometime that morning because she was still a little warm. I took her home to gut her and the insides just didn't look right. Everything was intact but it was an awful grayish color. Hat a weird smell too, not rotten, just nasty. I decided to just take the backstraps, so I turned her over and slit her down the spine. The meat was the same gray color, and I said "I ain't eating none of this." I took her to the woods for the buzzards. I'm never trying that again. I must have washed my hands ten times that afternoon and could still smell that weird funk. I talked to my cousin in law that day and he said that lots of times when they get road killed the meat just turns to jelly from the shock. Has anybody else seen this or have you been able to get good meat off a road kill?

That is a bruiser for sure. Love them dark horns!
Well i have plenty of experience with hitting deer!! lol Some of the deer you can get some meat off but it really depends on where the deer was hit.

Not a bad buck at all. as for the salvage of road killed deer I've never tried it but would if I was the hitter or saw it hit so I knew how fresh it was. A agree with Swampie...depends on the hit and by what?
