Saturday is the day.. The boy is going with me should be a good opener cool but not cold pre-rut is kicking in ..found a few rubs and scrapes this past weekend.

Opening weekend of Gun season... Started with an almost full moon .. Not good.
Was in the stand right at daybreak... Around 9 I had a deer sneak past me could not tell what it was.. Then around 9:30 a big 8pt came by and hung around for 5 minutes or so.. The rest of the weekend not so good..

Did not see a thing saturday man that moon was bright. Mid-day sat I moved my climber to another spot where tho owner has always seen good buck.. With the full moon I did not want to climb in the stand at daylight.. I waited till around 7:30.. I was just getting settled in when a doe and and almost shooter 10pt came by. He was probably a high 130 buck not quite big enough.. A while after they wondered off an 8pt came from the direction they went he was probably 100" to 110" give him a few years and he will be nice. The little guy walked right under me easy bow shot I managed to get a few crappy pics with my cell cam his rack doesn't show up it was dark colored,had it been white you could see it. The yellow line is where he walked after I grunted at him.  would not stand still..  |

Short story...
I was sent up over looking a grove of mature pines with younger pines and mix hardwoods behind me.. The morning was perfect cool and clear with a slight breeze...The sunrise came with little fanfare and no deer .. I did a little light rattling and made a few soft grunts and then waited.
I grunted every 15 min or so I always do I get bored and it gives me something to do. ;D. Around 8:30 I had just completed a series of grunts and heard something behind me.. There on the same trail I walked in on stood the buck..
I watched him for a few minutes as he just stood there trying to find the source of the grunts. After a while he took several steps forward I could see him real good now and wasn't sure if he was a shooter.. He stepped into the mature pines and continued to look for the other buck. I watched him for almost five minutes and could tell he was getting nervous and was about to bolt.
It was then I decided to take him, he was quartering away slightly so I put the cross hairs high on his front shoulder and squeezed off. The 150gr psp .308 busted the front shoulder and severed the spine dropping him in his tracks..
I just got off the phone with my taxidermist he has a cape.. so Fred is gonna have company on the wall.

I wonder if he did that to his g2 in velvet or if it just grew like that?
Get any age on him, I would say he looks like he is atleast 4 yrs old.

Yeah I was thinking he damaged it in velvet and he was at least 3.5 just judging by the mass on the bases.. He had a long body and weighed at least 180 I did not weigh him though.. |

Well the best laid plans and all that stuff.
After 8 days of hard hunting I got skunked.. I don't feel too bad after talking to owner of the deer cooler ,he said it was one of the worst weeks in a long time. I did see deer just no shooters now I didn't see a lot of deer I averaged a deer a day most of the deer I saw were bucks.I saw several good 8s and a big 7pt just not quite there yet. Still finding fresh rubs and scrapes everywhere so the rut is not quite on yet. The locals say about another week..
The most deer I saw in one sit was this morning. I saw 2 does no shot 3 small bucks and one Bruiser that got across the food strip before I could get on him.. I think this next week is gonna be good despite the moon phase.
Anyway rather then hunt this weekend I decided to come home[already promised momma] I picked up my two deer from a couple weeks ago and to my surprise they filled up two big cooler. Overall it was still a good week.
I will be back in the wood Thanksgiving weekend and try it again..
