Whitetail Rut Report Week 17

"You should have been here last week", Or, "Or you should have come next week!" Heard either of these statements before? Even better is, "You really hit this one perfectly!"
It's Monday the 22nd of November and I have just returned from a long road trip that started out hunting mule deer in Colorado with my old friend Lee Sells (www.leesellsoutitters.com). Thankfully I pretty much hit it right while hunting with Lee. The area we hunted in western Colorado was the same area I hunted with Lee in the year past. Changes in the area included tremendously increased oil and gas exploration activities. But in spite of this we still saw a lot of mule deer and numerous elk. As it worked out I shot a really nice, dark antlered 4 x 4 (no brow tines) in almost the exact area where the year previous I shot a 32 1/2 inch outside 5 x 5.
From Grand Junction my field producer/cameraman Blake Barnett and I flew to Edmonton, Alberta for a whitetail hunt with Neil Johnson (North Star Outfitting) hunting just west of Lloydminster. We hunted hard, saw a couple of young whitetail bucks..but saw numerous mule deer. Through the outfitter I was able to procure a mule deer permit and license and thus we hunted both mule deer and whitetail. I wanted the mule deer tag in case we saw a monster buck... As it worked out we never saw either a monster whitetail or mule deer, even though the timing should have been perfect and the weather ideal for hunting (extremely cold and snow). But that is hunting. I knew there were both big whitetail and mule deer bucks in the area. I did see bucks chasing does (both mule deer and whitetails), but the bucks chasing were young and small. No doubt however the rut was underway this past week, and will continue even strong this week of Thanksgiving.
