This is a subject that I have dealt with over the years. Is it better to use one deer rifle that you call "Old Faithful" or better to use different rifles for different hunting situations? To better answer this question we must look at every hunting scenario that we face putting more weight on the ones that happen most often such as quick in your face shots to less common 300+ yard shots. Out of all the deer that I have killed over the years 80% have been 70 yards or less. I would guess that out of these up close and personal shots that 30% are being shot left handed. Due to me mostly hunting in thick cover about 20% of these deer are being sized up and shot very quickly with little time to waste. Enough about percentages, I love knowing that I have a rifle for every situation out there. In all honesty when it comes down to putting more deer in the dirt I have to go with using "Old Faithful" for getting the job done. When using the same rifle all of the time, you know how everything works without thinking about it. You eliminate fumbling with the safety and having a different trigger pull. The scope adjustment comes as second nature too along with the barrel length. The barrel length you may be asking curiously? I have used magnum rifles with longer barrel lengths that have resulted in hitting limbs trying get on a deer causing some unwanted attention. I have personally come to the conclusion that I am better off using one rifle for more success in the deer woods. What do you guys think???

I'm going with the "old faithful" approach...I bought the rifle for specifically that reason. I can use it at about any range on any big game animal I will ever hunt. I would love to buy setups for different situations, but until I can afford that, i don't need to.

I use two rifles during the season. Both get hunted with regularly. One is my favorite since I was little being my ole marlin 30-30 and the other I use when hunting the fields which is my ruger 7mm mag. I love them both and both get equal attention.

Well there is always a reason to buy another gun, it is just my other half doesn't always see it that way.
Pending on how I'm hunting decides on what gun I use. When hunting with a gang (deer drives) I use a lever action gun for quick follow up shots. A pump rifle would be good for this, but I just never bought one (HMMMM, maybe I should buy one, sounds like a good reason to me).
When still hunting or sitting I like using a bolt action rifle.
When I'm not positive what kind of hunting I might be doing for the day, I do have an "old faithful", my lever action .307 Winchester.
