i was talking to one of the guys i went to school with the other day and he told me that another one of the guys we went to school with fell out of his lock-on a few weeks back. he climbed up and when he got in the seat he noticed that the stand was a little loose. he bent over to tighten the bottom ratchet strap and something happened with the strap and the stand rocked forward and threw him out. he was falling head first and managed to flip himself around and landed on his feet. he broke one of his legs so bad that the bone was sticking out. i avoid lock-ons for that very reason, but any of the stands we use can pose serious dangers and we all need to be sure that we check our equipment either before or after our hunts. stay safe out there.

Sorry to hear that but why wasnt he wearing his harness. This would be a non issue if guys would just wear a harness. I hear so many of these stories that wouldnt happen if there was just a little disipline.

i'm sure he wishes he was wearing a harness and i'm sure he'll consider it if he gets to hunt this year.

Really it shouldnt be a consideration it should just be automatic. Mine stays with my jacket so its never forgotten. I was one of those guys that didnt wear one for years but now its part of my daily gear.

It amazes me every time I hear one of these stories. Something terrible happens, when it could have been avoided. It comes down to laziness, pure and simple. Harnesses are not expensive, easy to use, and work when worn properly. What good excuse can someone have for not wearing one? If the person has a legitimate reason NOT to wear one, then they shouldn't be climbing in the first place.
As my father has told me or a long time, stupid hurts.

I don't know about the rest of yall, but I don't buy used stands. That being said, the last chain on i bought was ~$39.00 after tax. It came with a padded seat, harness, 2 safety straps, and a recovery strap. They are not hard to use and don't have to be the $80 cadillac type harness to work. I use the one that came with my chain on daily and it does exactly what it was designed for. It provides a safe way to not only place my screw in pegs, but to hang my stand. I'm able to put the strap on the tree, hook it to my harness, and then safely lean out and maneuver are the tree as needed... I am a bit of a hypocrite though. I don't use my harness when in my climber. just don't see a need for it so long as i keep up with preventative maintenance on it

It seems like if you hunt from a stand enough that a fall is more than likely going to happen. I am not the most graceful or lucky guy by any means, so I wear my harness every time I hunt from a tree. Too many close calls and don't like the idea of either a bear or gator walking up to my paralyzed body licking on my toes!
