well, the south carolina department of natural resources has listened to the hunters. the dnr is in the process of revamping our hunting regulations. since i started hunting about 15 years ago, the regulations were this. 5 deer per zone and no more than 10 per year. there were a certain amount of doe days per year depending on population studies and you could buy 5 doe tags for about $20. if it had horns, you just shoot it. they're still in the planning stages and trying to get all the details sorted out, but they're changing things up this year. from what i understand so far, each hunter can buy up to 8 tags for $5 each and 4 of them can be doe the other buck. so it looks like we're finally going to get a managment program other than if it's brown it's down! i'm excited and i hope they keep it around long enough to see some positive results. it'd be nice to see some bigger bucks coming from around here. i know they have the potential to get big from what i've seen on people's walls, but with the current program they never have the chance.
so dag, and all you other SC hunters, what do you think?

Glad you are getting some changes made. One question is how are your bucks gonna get bigger if they are passin out tags like that? People are still gonna shoot the first buck that comes in seeing as how they have so many tags avalible. I know the mentality of most hunters is shoot it and look for the next one. Most dont have the patience to let the little ones walk. Hope it works out for ya!!!

I've hunted deer in Pennsylvania for 46 yrs.We had a 3inch spike and larger rule for about 40 yrs.The most common buck taken was a y buck. Now they have to have 3 pts on one side minimum.I've finally been able to take a 9 pt.

It's going to take a few years, or more, before the quality of our bucks gets better, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. i've never been a shoot everything that moves kind of guy anyway so i probably won't buy more than 4 tags a year. of course, as always, the success of the program will depend on those who actually follow the rules. here's the link with all the details. www.dnr.sc.gov/news/yr2011/jan13/jan13_deer.html

My question to you is, how many people are able to tag out on bucks with 5?. If most people don't, then I don't see it making much of a difference. Personally, here in Indiana, it used to be that all the little bucks were killed, but now they have a one buck rule. One buck for the whole year, whole state. Since then, I think the bucks are able to mature and have more potential. because more people hold out for a big one because they can only take one. I definitely don't end my season on a deer that I won't be happy with. You still have some people that shoot immature deer, but it is better than a free for all.
It looks like your state is going in the right direction to try to improve overall harvest age of bucks. It is definitely better than a point restriction which in my opinion is rediculous. When you can't shoot an 8 year old heavy mass tall tined buck because he only has 3 points on one side or take out wounded deer legally that is going to suffer, the regulations have crossed the line.
Personally I wouldn't want to shoot a buck unless it is decent size/mature, I would rather take a shot at a tasty doe. If there is that many deer they should be encouraging anterless deer kills, but I know the chance at a large buck is what gets people out and gives the state money. If I were making the laws, I would say two bucks statewide. But then again I don't live in SC, all I know is what I have heard.

well, the success of the program will definitely depend on people following the rules, as always. who knows, it may flop and our quality stay the same, or get worse, but something is better than nothing.

Yeah, that is definitely true about following the rules. I heard a statistic, they said that just as many deer are taken with poaching as with people that follows the laws. So I guess that has to be acounted for when passing new laws.
