some of you may remember that i've been considering getting a varmint grade 308. i got to doing some research and came across er shaw. now they've got a mark vii rifle that they sell and it looked like a pretty nice gun, but upon further research, it turns out that they're just taking a boyd's stock and one of their barrels and putting it on a savage action. nothing wrong with savages, but i'm just not a fan. this is what i'm thinking about doing though. i'm considering getting a basic remington 700 sps in 308, but then getting a better stock, possibly a boyd's, and then getting a custom barrel from someone like er shaw. i've heard and read some good things about their barrels, but does anyone have any experience with other barrel makers?
this is what i've got in mind for a semi custom gun.
remington 700 sps in 308 custom barrel (varmint) jewel trigger stock that's better than what comes on the gun

I bought the sps tactical 308 last year. It came with a hogue stock. For out of the box performance its a great gun. Im throwing around the idea of putting the jewel trigger in mine as well.

Shaw's are good barrels. Here are a few others to look into.
Hart Krieger Lilja Pac-Nor Shilen
I would suggest the 700 action for best accuracy. Have a smith blueprint the action while he is installing the barrel. As for triggers, Jewel is right at the top. I would also suggest you have the smith install that as well as they can be a nightmare on the 700's. Savage triggers are a cinch to change, but not so much with the 700.
As for stock, I would recommend Richards Micro-fit for laminate and Bell & Carlson for synthetic. The B&C with aluminum bedding would be my first choice.
With that setup, I would say you would have a 1/2" gun shooting 168gr match ammo at 100 yards.

I would love to build up a custom tack driver! After bench shooting this weekend, I would love to build a 22-250! I put a hurting on the fellow shooters at 100 yards with my 308, but at 300 yards they nicely returned the favor! LOL...

thanks for the replies fellas. machete, how does it shoot? I was/am thinking about that same rifle. is it picky about the bullet weight? JD, those are some interesting suggestions and only adds to my options! Term, 22-250s are certainly tack drivers and i hope to add it to my collection one day. when me and my buddy were shooting the other day we tried some shots at 300 yards. did pretty good considering i've never practiced shooting that far, although i did shoot one at a little over 250 one time. bad decision on my part since i didn't have any practice for that range.

I would go with a McMillan A3 stock with a Rock barrel. As for bullets I am a BIG fan of the 168 AMAX's. You can also save some money with a Howa action. I am in the process of building a Winchester model 70 in 7mm mag. Just waiting for the stock to come in from McMillan. I will be throwing up pics when it is done.
