Hey Guys. I am new to hunting and was wondering what type of gun I should get to use for hunting turkey and deer. I was thinking Mossberg 500 series shotgun. What do you guys think? Thanks!

Personally Im Benelli kind of guy. Yes they are expensive but the reliability, accuracy and performance are better than any other gun makers on the market. Personally I would buy a Superblack eagle which chambers 2.75 to 3.5 for turkey and other birds. Although it can shoot slugs i would reccommend buying one of their slug barrels. Either way price wise mossbergs are really nice and if you take care of it, it should work fine.

Welcome to the board and to the wonderfully frustrating world of hunting. Its great to hear of new people trying out hunting. As for the choice of guns. I think you have made a great choice for an all around hunting tool. Not to mention they are very affordable for what they can do. Take care of it and you will have a hunting partner for a long time. If ya need any other help dont be afraid to ask we have a great group of guys here that are always willing to help.

Welcome MJJF77. Its good to have another inmate here at the nut house. LOL!
You should do well with that Mossburg as long as you take good care of it and use it safely. I use a Remington 870 Express with a super full turkey choke on the long beards, and always take my 50 cal. Thompson Center Hawken for deer gun season. Good luck on your hunts this year, and let us all know how you do.
Be carefull and Knock over a big one! Smoke...

Welcome to the board!
As to your question, the Mossberg 500 is a fine shotgun. However, you need to go with what fits you/feels the best. I would suggest also looking at the Remington 870 Express for comparison. Depending on your budget, you can buy either of them as a combo set. You get a field barrel and a deer barrel, and switch back and forth as you wish.

Thanks for all the help guys and making me feel welcomed! Yeah I am new to the sport just something I have always wanted to do. I live in southeastern mass and I plan on taking a crack at the spring turkey hunt. I am def gonna look into the Benelli as well as the Remington 870 Express. Thanks for the feedback and I will let everyone know how I am making out! Thanks again.

I have a Remington 870 Wingmaster with both a field barrel and a rifled slug barrel and also a Mossberg 835 Turkey gun (thought about getting the slug barrel for it as well), both are great guns. The 870 Express and the 500 are also great. I would suggest looking at both and see what feels better to you, thats what matters the most. The remington may cost a tad more but if you feel more comfortable with it go with it. Guns last a long time when taken care of and if you look at the investment say over 20 years the price difference is next to nothing.
Best of luck and welcome Arrow
