I was thumbing through the Bass Pro shop catalog earlier & came across a retractable gear hoist for treestand hunting. Now thats a pretty darn good idea, especially for a climber stand. But heck Bass Pro wants $30 for one of these. Ive already spent an arm & a leg this year alone & the season hasnt even started. But I really wanted one. ;D So I got to lookin around the shop & found a retractable dog leash. Now my wife probably spent as much on this dog leash as I would on a retractable hoist system & ya know, Ive never seen her take her evening walks down to the mailbox with any of our 5 dogs on a leash. lol So I modified this dog leash into a gear hoist. The line that was in it was 12ft long & a 1/4 inch wide nylon leash that filled the reel. So I took it apart & spooled it up with 40ft of 1/16 coated steel cable & I attached a cable clamp & a rubber coated carbiner to the end. I also wrapped a piece of velcro stripping to the handle so it can be securely attached to the stand while climbing. Now granted, the dog leash, the cable, the carbiner & the time I spent tinkering probably cost a total of $30. But hey at least I didnt have to leave the house to spend more $$$ & I didnt have to drive an hour into the city to Bass Pro Shop to pick one up. & it can still be used as a dog leash. Win,win! Here's a pic of the finished product.

Good job but honestly for me I would have just spend the money and done it on line and had it sent to the house.

Im a sucker for DIY projects. If I can do it myself & save a buck, well Im gonna. Plus I know my gear is top notch & not some Chinese p.o.s.
