One of Uncle Vercy's mules got out one day and fell into an old cistern. There was no way to get the mule out, so Uncle Vercy says, "I can't just let him starve. I'll bury him and he'll suffocate, and that'll be a much quicker, more humane death."
So he went and got a shovel, and dug a shovelful of dirt and threw it on the mule's back. The mule snorted, shook the dirt off his back, and tromped it. Uncle Vercy threw another shovelful of dirt onto his back, and the old mule shook it off and tromped it, too. It didn't take but most of the afternoon before that old mule had shook off and tromped enough dirt to where he could just step right out of the cistern, which was now level with the ground. "Well," said Uncle Vercy, "I've got my mule back, and now I don't have to worry about anything else falling into that old cistern."
The moral of the story? As Jerry Clower, God rest his soul, said: "If you got a problem, if you got a burden, shake it off, and tromp it under your feet."
