Thats good news finally. The gun laws there are pretty stiff. Especially with handguns.

Canada has required all handguns be registered since the 1930's. There is no hunting with handguns in Canada, & we can only have them to shoot at an approved range. An Auth to Transport only allows you to take a HG from your home to the range & back. In general that is all CDNs are permitted to do with handguns, but there are exemptions to the strict laws.
The laws around long guns are much more relaxed and the changes in the Firearms Act simply removes the registration requirements and will destroy the Gov'ts records of the long guns currently registered but owners will still be required to take and pass a firearms safety course and obtain a Licence, which I think is a good thing.
One of the things I really hated about the Act was that if a law abiding gun owner had forgotten to renew their Licence they could be charged with a crime for being unlicenced and in possession of firearms, now that didn't happen very often but it has happened.
