I posted this about a month ago on facebook, but between a divorce, running a business, soccer practice for my daughter (every day), and a dog who has cheated death once again, I'm just now getting around to posting this here:
Last month, Barack Obama told a crowd in Roanoke: "If you've got a business, you didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen."
Really? Who paid $100 to the commonwealth of Virginia for the privilege of forming an LLC?
Who capitalized that business with his own money, the day after losing his own job?
Who went out and found suppliers to contract cruise for, while he was driving home from the meeting where he was told his job was eliminated?
Who found landowners whose timber needed managed, cruised, and sold?
Who cruised the timber, worked up the cruises, appraised the timber, and set the prices?
Who paid for the truck I drive to the woods, sometimes as far as 90 miles away, to provide these services for clients?
Who pays $3.25 a gallon, which is 85 percent higher than it was on the day you took office, for the gas that goes in the truck? (that's $1.75 a gallon in January 2009, for those of you not doing the math at home).
Who went out and bought a million dollars of liability insurance when one of my customers demanded it in the middle of a job?
Who works Saturdays and Sundays in the 90 degree heat (last month on at least two occasions with thunderstorms bearing down) because it was just too expensive to come back 75 miles from home some other time for an hour of work?
Who has supported himself and two kids with that business, who live with him more than half of the time, both of whom need to be driven to and from school almost 20 miles ONE WAY in a different county because my local (government supported) school system sucks?
Who paid for a computer, phone, aircard, printer, pens and pencils, tally cards, business cards, string, paper, biltmore stick, paint, printer cartridges, and a whole bunch of other stuff needed to run that business?
Who let their membership at the gym he attended for almost 3 years lapse for 3 months because there just wasn't enough money and something had to go?
Who went out and bought health insurance on the open market for himself, his kids, and his ex wife because there was no one else to do it?
Who did not accept food stamps, HUD, AFDC, or any other welfare program, even though on at least one occasion this January he took groceries out of the cart and put them back on the shelf because there wasn't enough money for it all?
Who has to pay quarterly estimated taxes today? Taxes on the income from the services he provides to others even though he also pays sales tax, income tax, property tax, fuel tax, and God knows how many other taxes?
I'll narrow it down, Mr. President: the two choices are me and you. And here's a hint: it damn sure wasn't you.
