My 11 year old brother wants to use my .243 Ruger M77 Leupold VXII this year. Instead of worrying about him messing it up, I asked my dad if he wanted to trade one of his other rifles. Here is what he would probably trade.
Weatherby .300 mag. I have a .300 rem mag Nikon Monarch Scope
Rem. 742 Woodmaster .308. Tasco I have some good history with that one.
Rem. 742 30-06 Bushnell
Rem. 7400 30-06 tasco
Marlin 30-30 lever Nikon Buckmaster
Old special edition gold trigger Marlin .22 lever action.
He has a nice Savage lever action in .300 Savage. I killed my first deer with it, but I don't know if he would give me it yet or not. If he said yes, I would definitely trade. But I doubt he would.
Ofcourse, I dont' have to trade. But more than likely will end up having to let my bro use the gun.
Would you trade??? For any of those.

Now, this is counting out the family aspect. Keep that in mind.
I would trade straight up for the Savage. For either of the 742's or the 7400 I would trade rifle for rifle, no optics. I would pass on the Marlin's unless there is sentimental attachment.
Now, that is not considering family. It is also not considering what you like, or what you already have. I am simply looking at it with value in mind. I am also not taking specific models, or conditions into consideration.
Bottom line, do what feels right down in your gut. And if you really want the Savage, ask. Worst he can say is no, and you will never know if you don't ask. Good luck!

Yeah, Its not a big deal. I know I will get most of the guns one day. Especially the Savage, because I killed my first deer with it. If I really wanted any of the guns he would probably let me have them.
I Think I may go with the .308 742. I like the .308 caliber and I have three bolt actions, so wouldn't mind having a meat hunter in the gun cabinet. Also, one of the only guns I ever shot at 200 hundred yards and hit exactly one inch low dead center.
It is missing the little plate on the bottom of the butt stock. I'm sure I could get a new one.
My ruger .243 is practically brand new though, and the optics on the .308 need an upgrade.

the 742's are good guns. unless i'm mistaken they only hold a total of 4 bullets. which isn't a big deal, but i'm with jd. i wouldn't let that scope go with it. dadgum leupolds are worth their weight in gold. at least leupold thinks so.

That's a long story. Not one I am proud of.

I guess i haveanother option for ya. Let your little bro use the gun just teach him the way to repect your gun. I think that would be more important than worrying about him messing it up. Education is your best advantage with that young man.

Education is your best advantage with that young man. That would be a good idea, but you don't know my brother. I call him Vince the Destroyer. This is the main reason I didn't want to let him borrow it. He needs to use his own gun anyway.

I wouldn't trade anything for the Weatherby .300 mag. That is because I own one.
Go with the Savage
