There was 2" of new snow on the ground when I got to the farm just before 6am.. too late for my liking but oh well. As I was putting my gear on the birds were gobbling on the roost so I hurried to a little field surrounded by bush that I thought that they might hit based on where the gobbling was coming from. I no sooner got to the field and could hear them on the ground and moving quickly. I picked a tree and got my call out, I made a call and 2 were gobbling at me. I didn't have to wait long & I watched them come into the field, strutting every so often as they entered the field. There were 3 jakes and the 1st one into the field ran right towards me like he was on a string to about 40yds then stopped. I had a branch in my way and when I shifted to get a better sight picture he must have seen me and he headed in the opposite direction. The other 2 jakes continued strutting & gobbling at about 80 yds & didn't really move too much until a couple of hens entered the field and led them away. I made some "clucks" & "cuts" as they left the field but they just gobbled and followed the ladies away. I had ranged a rock in the field at 40yds, made a couple calls and then this jake appeared just at the top of a knoll at the edge of the field. He strutted and I estimated him to be about 45yds away. He didn't make any moves to enter the field & so I set the cross-hairs on him, snapped the trigger & down he went. I collected my prize and then ranged the shot..... 55yds, wow I really misjudged the distance and I got lucky, I never should have taken that shot - I am only using a 12ga with a full choke & 2 3/4" shells, like I said I got lucky. 40 minutes from the time I got out of my truck. 14-16lb bird, nubs for spurs, & 3-4" beard. I've been invited to go to Northern Ontario on a Moose hunt with a buddy at the end of September & got the green light from the Wife. We are going to be hunting about 24hr drive North from where we live, So to put that in perspective, its about the same distance as if I were to drive to Ft Meyers FL from here but the gas is a lot more expensive up north LOL. So now... the preparations begin. Ned

I'm picking this mount up on Saturday, its been done for a while, I just don't have anywhere to display it (that my wife will be ok with).... It looks great, I'm going to reveal it at a party on Saturday, a friends mount is going to be there too. his buck scored 176" and mine 190" - I'm going to take some new pics on Saturday & I'll post some here.

Sounds like you will be busy, our season is the last week of April until end of May. I'm going to mix it up with 12ga & crossbow this season.
Best of luck Ned

I'm going to buy my tag. I had no time to hunt the last couple of seasons.
Now.... Shotgun or crossbow?

Steve from Blue Mountain Taxedermy finished the mount for the buck I collected in the fall. It was the show piece at the Big Buck Contest held at the Ivy Hall this past weekend. Ned

I've been mucking around for a bit looking at deer feeders & homemade gravity feeders. We don't have much selection here & the nearest BPS & Sail Outdoor stores are 100 miles from here. We have 2-3ft of snow in the winter so checking the feeder isn't easy, with most gravity feeders you have to re-fill them too often so I was leaning towards a largevfeeder with a broadcaster/spreader but with the cold temps here (it's been below freezing since mid December) the batteries don't last & the cost of the feeder & a solar charger is out of my budget so I came up with this.. Check it out & let me know what you think? Ned Sent from my iPhone using ProBoards
